The Invisible Truth
The exhibition, The Invisible Truth, was the final project for the upper-level LALIS/WGSS seminar, “Embodied Politics in Latin America: Race, Gender, Sex, and Performance,” taught by Dr. Mariela Méndez in the Spring of 2018. The objective of the course was the to explore the wide possibilities of performance art in Latin America to stage resistance against acts of violence towards women. The students learned about various acts of resistance in Latin America, including the work of Mexican feminist, Marcela Lagarde, before exploring acts of violence against women on the University of Richmond’s campus. The goal was to determine how the university system supports some women, some “bodies,” and not others. They collected data, interviewed students and professors, y took photos of the most vulnerable places on campus for women. They also developed their own definition of gender-based violence. They organized all of this information into a narrative and a manifesto for change which they shared with the larger community in their exhibit.

La exposición, La Verdad Invisible, fue el proyecto final del curso avanzado de LALIS/WGSS, “Embodied Politics in Latin America: Race, Gender, Sex, and Performance,” enseñado por la profesora Mariela Méndez en la primavera de 2018. El objetivo del curso fue explorar las varias posibilidades de presentación artística en Latinoamérica para oponerse a la violencia contra las mujeres. Los estudiantes del curso aprendieron sobre distintos actos de resistencia en Latinoamérica, incluso el trabajo de la feminista mexicana Marcela Lagarde, antes de explorar la violencia contra las mujeres en la Universidad de Richmond. La meta fue analizar cómo el sistema universitario apoya a algunas mujeres, algunos cuerpos, y a otros no. Consiguieron datos, entrevistaron a estudiantes y profesores, y tomaron fotos de los lugares más vulnerables para las mujeres dentro el campus. Además, desarrollaron su propia definición de la violencia de género. Organizaron toda esa información en una narrativa y un manifesto que compartieron con la comunidad universitaria en una exposición.
